Beach Driving Season is Right Around the Corner

Have you ever been beach driving before? It is lots of fun! The Outer Banks is a great place to try it. Come drive along the coast, right in the sand, in select locations throughout the Outer Banks!

Beach driving season is right around the corner. In some locations, such as Cape Hatteras National Seashore, you can drive on the beach year-round, but in many locations, car access is seasonal. Starting on March 10th, off-road vehicles will be permitted at Cape Lookout National Seashore!

Permits are required, but a pass is good for the entire year. A permit also gets you access to beach driving at North Core Banks (Portsmouth Island) and South Core Banks (Davis Island). The permit must be printed and kept in the car. Permit information can be accessed here: https://www.nps.gov/calo/planyourvisit/orv_ed_certificate.htm

Wondering what vehicles are allowed? Essentially, anything that you think is capable of off-road use in deep, soft sand. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended, but two-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed if you feel that your car is safe.

Drive slow, and remember that pedestrians have right-of-way. Be sure to lower your tire pressure too- and remember that, the softer the sand, the lower the pressure should be.
