Early mornings are pure wonder here. The calm water reflects the sky like glass, and the rising sun lights up the spartina grass in gold. Birds are most active at dawn namely, the great egrets, ibises, and even the occasional peregrine falcon moving through. You’ll feel miles from everything, yet, fully immersed in the natural soul of the OBX.
These local entry points offer the best access to the Outer Banks’ most scenic and wildlife-rich marsh routes:
Located just off Woods Road, this launch gives you direct access to a sprawling maritime forest and marsh ecosystem. Quiet, shady, and full of songbirds. Parking is easy, and the paddling loop here is well-sheltered from wind.
Bring your binoculars! This refuge on Hatteras Island is a favorite for birdwatchers and peaceful paddling. You’ll find a launch just south of the Visitor Center. It’s best at high tide, when the water threads deep into the marsh creeks.
A local favorite for sunset paddles. Put in from the public ramp on Westcott Park Drive and follow the shoreline north. Marsh grasses and calm coves make this route beginner-friendly, and you’ll often spot dolphins just offshore.
A wilder option for experienced paddlers. Launch from Buffalo City Road and head into a vast blackwater world. Bald cypress trees rise from tannin-stained creeks, and black bears have been spotted on shore too.
Paddling here feels like slipping into a secret world, with few crowds and endless sky. This serene launch offers access to the calm waters of Currituck Sound and the protected marshes of the Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary. It’s a favorite for spotting herons, otters, and the occasional bobcat paw print along the shore.
Beautiful Sunset over the Currituck Sound near Duck, NC in the Outer Banks.
